Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the Outdoors

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we have a few ideas about how to marry lessons with environmental learning.

Here are five ways to merge your AAPI Heritage observation with outdoor instruction.

Outdoor Reading: AAPI Heritage month offers a wonderful opportunity to delve into great literature on pioneers, history, or haiku. These lessons can be illuminated in nature, where students can bring their reading to life outside the confines of the classroom.

Virtual Trips Reimagined: There are several programs that offer at-home virtual adventures through Asian countries. Why not add a dose of reality to the hands-on tour? As students explore cultural roots through architecture and landscapes, they can compare and contrast the virtual world with the one they dwell in. To take it a step further, the lessons could include simulating the virtual realm with outdoor art projects.

Outdoor Concert: Experience the ukulele, drums, and other instruments through an outdoor concert that brings together your educational community in a festive way.

Learn New Languages in Nature: New languages are meant to be experienced as much as learned. Teach students common phrases and outdoor objects by showing them instead of simply telling.

Outdoor Picnic: Sample traditional foods from Asian and Pacific Island countries through an outdoor meal that embraces the special ingredients of dishes and nature.
